If you’ve read any of my blogs, you’ve noticed that I love colours. Most of my activities/crafts involve some soft of dye. This recipe takes the cake, or should I say …. peel :)

It’s pretty easy – much easier than it looks and it’s just so cool! Here’s what you do

Step 1 – find some big  oranges, the bigger and the harder the better!

Step 2 – cut the orange in half and hallow out the inside

Step 3 – prepare Jell-O as per it’s directions

Step 4 – Pour the liquid Jell-O into the orange bowls, we used muffin trays to support the oranges so they didn’t tip

Step 5- place the oranges in the fridge and run up to bed and sleep!

Step 6- Wake up and run down ( I know you will, I did to, it’s kind of like being a kid on Christmas Morning) and see your creation

Step 7 – carfully with a very sharp knife slice the oranges into “Orange Jell-O slices”…

Step 8 – Enjoy – but be careful, these can get messy - I suggest keeping a good supply of baby wipes on hand to clean up little mouthes and fingers! You might even want to check out all of our new babywipe cases - great to carry around extra wipes in, which you’ll need for messy hands!

Orange ya’ glad you read this post :P

Playdough – from scratch
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I just loved this activity and Im sure you will too – I was surfing the net to find a great recipie for playdough but it seemed they all called for cream of tartar – now I dont know about you – but I didn’t have any in my pantry – and I wasn’t about to pack up all the kids to make a special trip for something I’d likely never use again… so I found this recipie over at natural parenting tips

Play Dough Recipe:

  • 1 Cup Plain Flour
  • 1/4 Cup Salt
  • 3 tsp of vinegar or lemon juice
  • 2 Tablespoons of Oil (original recipe I only used 1 tbps I found it too oily)
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • Food Coloring

Method

  1. Mix the dry ingredients in a saucepan
  2. Whisk in the water over low heat
  3. Mix in the vinegar
  4. Pour in the oil
  5. Continue to mix over low heat until it forms a playdough texture
  6. Split up the dough, and knead in the food color (when it’s cool enough to touch)

I tripled the recipie and it made enough (and extras) for 4 kids! Just be easy on the oil, I’d suggest lowering it by half :)

If you have any other playdough recipies  – especially an edible one – please feel free to share below!

Enjoy!

 I Spy Colours!

This little game that can be easily made by you! This I Spy Game kept my little five year old ( and some neighbour friends as well!) busy for HOURS – really it did, both making and playing! The game can be used anywhere – in a resturant waiting for your meal, in your backyard – or in the car! And – it’s easy and fun to make – you can even let your child make it themselves with a little supervision and help!

Here’s what you need

  • Paint swatches – I let my son pick ours out, he really enjoyed it! (FREE!)
  • A D-Ring Binder (39 cents!)
  • Hole Punch(s) – we added a few extra star punches for fun! (I’m sure you have one at home!)

These were the pain swatches we found – I cut them in half so that there were a little more user friendly to little hands!

I then let my son join in on the activity. He punched holes in the top left corner of each paint swatch and then we inserted the D-Ring! Simple as that!

We then went outside and matched up colours from our neighbourhood ( and back yard) to the colours on the swatches – it was fun finding different shades too! Great acitivity to keep em’ active – work on colours and work on small motor skills punching the holes!!

Enjoy :)

Need a easy stuffing recipe for your Easter Turkey? Baby Yums would like to share thing simple yet tasty recipe. *Recipe found on Cooking Nook”

Best Turkey Stuffing

3/4 cup butter
2 1/2 cups chopped onions
2 cups chopped celery
4 teaspoons dried sage
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dried savory
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon marjoram
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
14 cups dried white bread, cubed

In a large frying pan, melt butter over a medium heat. Fry onions and celery together with the dried herbs, salt and pepper, stirring often, until vegetables are tender, about 10-15 minutes.

Transfer the mixture to a very large bowl. Add the bread cubes and mix well.

If you are making the stuffing ahead: Transfer the cooked vegetable mixture to a large bowl. Let cool and refrigerate in an airtight container for 24 hours. Mix with bread cubes before stuffing the bird.

Stuff the turkey at both ends with this mixture. (see our Roast Turkey Recipe for directions on stuffing the bird).

IMPORTANT: Stuff the turkey just before baking it. Do NOT stuff the bird ahead and let it sit, even in the refrigerator. It can become infected with bacteria and make you quite ill.

Enjoy and feel free to share your favorite stuffing!

Next week we will be posting our “Mother’s Day give-a-way”, another Kitchen Gadget & Spring time activities for the kids & a Family friendly recipe everyone can enjoy!

HAPPY EASTER WEEKEND!! Enjoy the long and much deserved Weekend

This isn’t our everyday made by you Wednesday – this is a special made by you Wednesday. We’re making miracles this week, each and every woman (and man) that comes across Spoiled Sugar this week and next  could be making a miracle.

It started off as a simple auction with a modest goal. One of the talented mommys who works with Spoiled Sugar creating our beanies has always been very active (since I’ve known her) in the Weekend to end cancer - in fact it was through her appearance on A Channel for that very cause that I found her! I thought it would be exciting if Spoiled Sugar could raise $100.00 towards her cause, a small way for me to give back from Spoiled Sugar and our amazing customers, but the auction took on a life of its own – with all sorts of amazing woman donating to make this an auction - worth bidding on! An auction that I hope will raise us close to $500.00 now for The Weekend To End Cancer – and what a great donation – on behalf of woman entrepreneurs and moms!

I’d like to take this opportunity this week to introduce you to our current contributors for the auction – please check out their website and support their businesses – they’re amazing woman who very generously donated an item to our auction to help us create miracles!

Baby Yum – $30.00 Gift Certificate

Cupcake Fairy – Cupcake Bouquet

Gymboree Play and Music - A Parachute  & A Free Month Membership ( new and current clients!)

Blooming Bundles – $25.00 Gift Certificate

Loopy 4 Ewe  – Beanie

Eko Bear Toys - Piggy Paint

Babys Breath Design – custom apron & Chef hat

Steeped Tea – Wellness Package

Cakes By Design – Giant Cupcake w/ 12 regular cupcakes

Stella and Dot – Childrens Jewelry

Pish Posh Jewelry – Necklace and Earrings

Spoiled Sugar – Destash of demo items & $50.00 Gift Certificate

And that’s not it – there are still many more donations being finalized, there is certainly something here for everyone, more details will follow on next weeks blog as well as an updated list of all of our amazing contributors.

I can’t say it enough – Im so so amazed at the generosity of the woman in our community – we’re doing a really, really good thing here – and it’s all because of you, each one of you! I can’t wait to tally up the final numbers and present a big fat check on behalf of moms, woman entrepreneurs and superheroes ( as far as Im concerned)!

Thanks again everyone!

PS Save the date: April 15-17th!!

If you were around last week and decided to make the rainbow cupcakes Im sure you have some extra food colouring laying around the house – as did we – and this is a super fast, really fun and easy little rainbow activity you can make at home!

Materials:

1 package of your favourite vanilla ( or banana!) instant pudding ( and the ingrediants it calls for)

Food colouring!

Directions:

Prepare the pudding according to directions. Let pudding refrigerate for 15-20 minutes and then start playing! Seperate the pudding into four ( or more if you want) bowls and add food colouring into each pudding mix it up!

And then layer it up! We bought plastic measuring cups from the dollar store to serve ours in - the kids loved the handle and it was clear so the rainbow effect was really fun!

This cute little rainbow pudding took us just 15 minutes to put together – it’s a super fun really cute activity – try it tonight :)

Made By You Wednesday – Finger Paint

We love painting. Especially finger painting. Our trio  started finger painting when they were about 12 months, a wonderful friend suggested it to us, and we’ve been doing it ever since. But it gets expensive, and I knew there must have been some recipe out there that worked. I found a few methods with cornstartch but I NEVER have luck with that stuff.

This finger paint recipie was super fast, really easy – and made with staple items from your kitchen

1 cup of water

1 cup of flour

1 cup of dish soap

That’s it – I suggest mixing the flour and water first before adding the soap otherwise you’ll have a mini bathtub in your bowl, if you find your mixture is too thick, just add more water ( yes it’ll create the bathtub effect but just keep stirring slowly they’ll go away)

We devided our paint into several tubs and added regular food colouring. It created a TON of finger paint, this recipie will give you enough for at least a month with one child, much cheaper than the store bought version!

Another tip: We often use old newspaper to finger paint on the kids never mind – what do you use to finger paint on? Do you buy the fancy paper? Wax paper? Styrofoam plate?.. Tell us!

Ps – I had some AWESOME photos to accompany this – but  our blog is still working out glitches – I apologize!

For our first made by you Wednesday I’ve come up with a very easy activity you can do with your little ones. I was inspired by my ipad – my son was playing a game of memeory and I thought how can we make our own memory game – it was pretty easy!

Materials Required

- Some sort of fancy cardstock paper ( they had cute glitter paper but it was expensive $3.29, we went for onsale paper $.29centes)

- Fabric scraps

-Glue

- Mod Podge

- Scissors

I found this funky paper for 29 cents – it was made for perfect “playing Cards”

The lines made it really easy to decide where the paper had to be cut – which was super  handy! – Although not having a lefty pair of scissors in the house with my older son who is left handed – wasn’t so handy :) (mental note to self – buy lefty scissors!)

Once the cards where all cut we sliced up some scrap peices of fabric that would make up our matching game, you can use anything, stickers, mix matched socks, old tshirts – bingo dabbers – get creative!

We glued the fabric scraps on – and then sealed it with Mod Podge – just for good measure … and away we go, you have yourself a fun homemade matching game :)
