-37 in Ottawa today, -41 with Wind chill please be careful with your little ones and pets

Ottawa is in a deep freeze.  For the last 3 days it’s been -27 or colder.  My dog is going crazy, she wants to run, but can only stay out for a few moments before she’s back at the door to come in.  My 2 year old constantly wants to go play in the snow, but all I want to do is cuddle on the couch. It’s supposed to be cold till the end of the week.  Stay covered, and watch for signs of frostbite.  If you’re cold, your pet is too!!!

Taffy Lane, a New or Exisiting Family Tradition??

Hey Everyone,

When I moved to Ottawa 10+ years ago, one of the first Christmas Traditions I was introduced to was Taffy Lane in Orleans.  This tiny cresent is very well known for Over the Top Christmas decorating – for MOST of the houses.    The closer you get to Christmas, the busier the street gets, it actually becomes a one way street.

Even though I would go every year to see it, I had never truly appreciate what a gem it was until this year when my 23 month old son, Spencer, helped me to see it through his eyes.  One evening we walked over, and the OOHS and WOWS that came from my little boy made me appreciate the splendor of this street.  We spent a ton of time pointing and looking and running and being entertained.

Luckily we live within walking distance, so a couple nights a week, we have an early dinner, and walk over as a family to truly experience it with Spence.  If you haven’t seen it yet, I would HIGHLY recommend you make the trip to see it.  Park the car and walk the crescent… you certainly won’t be disappointed.

I think this is the start of truly magical Christmases for my little family, I’m really looking forward to it.  I wish you a magical holiday too!

Amanda

Our first show!

Hey Spoiled Sugar Family – On Saturday December 1 I participated in my first show.  Shopping & Sweets , what a great idea!  Some of your favorite vendors AND cupcakes???  What could be nicer.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone (new and faithful!) for coming over to support me, and to introduce yourself.  I had a great time, and I truly hope you enjoyed checking out all of our goodies for yourself…

Now that I know how much time and effort goes into doing a show, I’m thinking of finding another one for the spring… lol, maybe I’ll start working on my display now!

Thanks again everyone, it was a great day, and lots of fun!

Amanda

Last night was possibly the coldest night we’ve had so far this winter (scary to think come Feb we’ll think -15 isn’t so bad).  I wasn’t sure what we were going to do for the hour or so we have before dinner.  I saw a recipe on Facebook for Salt Dough, and was excited as I knew I already had all the ingredients needed!

Here’s what you need:

1/2 cup of Salt

1/2 cup of Flour

1/4 -1/2 cup of Water

Add ingredients to a bowl

Kneed until you get a dough that you want to work with

Make your decoration/print ect..

Cook on a cookie sheet at 100 degrees for 3 hours

Paint/decorate and Seal.  Voila!

To be honest, no matter how I described it to Spencer he didn’t want to put his hand into the dough.  There was a bit of a battle, which made for “retakes” – I just added a bit of water to keep the dough soft.  Caleb didn’t mine, and our dog just looked at me like I was crazy!

We baked them last night, and will paint tonight.  I’m not sure what we’ll use to “seal” them, but I’m sure we’ll figure something out and I’ll report back, and add pictures of our finished product!

Happy crafting!

Amanda

p.s  my counters had a salty film over them when we were done – I just gave them a good wipe down and we were set to go!

More things to consider before enrolling your child in an immersion program

Hello everyone, Emily-the-Expat-Teacher here again with some thoughts on if you do decide to enroll your child in an immersion program.

Should you make that decision here is the best possible way to ensure their success:

Realize that you are also enrolling in an immersion program.

Without exception every student I have taught that has taken to English like a dog to a bone has had someone at home with whom they can practice English with. These people encourage, support and above all make having that other language relevant in a non-school setting. You don’t have to be fluent, just be willing to learn along with your child! The best way to learn something is to teach it so if you allow your child to teach you one piece of vocabulary a day that they have learned you are empowering your child to love and understand their own education. Not to mention the added bonus that you may indeed find yourself learning more than you expected!

Here are some tips.

1)Encourage bilingual play. Toys like farm animals or “Mr. Face” (which can be made from felt) are wonderful practice tools for animal names, locations, parts of the face, emotions, expressions, everything! Play with your child in English and also your child’s alternate language

.

2)Have “Foreign Language Dinner” one night a week where everyone tries to talk about their day in the language you’re all learning. You can start off simply, say “My day was bon” and by the end of the school year you’ll surprise yourself with how much you and your family can communicate in another language. If you truly want to go all out you could even attempt to cook a meal inspired by the language being studied. (A different French recipe for each “French-Speaking Dinner”)

http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/ingredient/julia_child/

Here is a link to a few recipes from Julia Child, famous for bringing French Cuisine to North America…or if you want you can always just make Poutine. Certain to be a hit with the kids!

3)If possible enroll your child in multilingual activities, ESPECIALLY over the summer. Summer Brain Drain is a real thing but if your child plays soccer in a French league then the language will remain relevant and stay in their minds, making the transition back to school a bit easier. If there are no activities available then download a children’s show in the language to watch over the summer or watch their favourite movie (that they’ve seen so many times they’ve MEMORIZED the English dialogue) in the foreign language.

4)Above all, have FUN! Don’t stress your child out by forcing them to use the language at play time if they don’t want to and don’t make your child sit through a foreign film because it’s educational. You want your child to have positive associations with their other language and luckily for children, learning language comes naturally, so always encourage rather than force.

As an educator I would highly recommend every child to explore another language, as a Canadian I feel a responsibility to encourage French or a First Nations’ language but any and all languages are beautiful, useful and will enrich the lives of your whole family.
