It happens often enough that Spoiled Sugar is approached by “pitch” from other companies to handout some freebies, and normally I pass – but given that this is a local restaurant that can actually accommodate my triplets ( which believe me, very very few restaurants can) I thought it’d why not host a little give away for them! AND I’m sure some Spoiled Sugar parents would LOVE a night out on Boston Pizza!
Here’s the catch head over to Boston Pizza Orleans on FACEBOOK and like them! Leave me a comment to say that you’ve liked them on facebook and you get a ballot – it’s that easy!
The winner will be announced Sunday evening Oct 6th, tickets can be picked up the night of the show at Empire Theaters in Orleans. Showtime is at 7:00pm on November 17th.
PS – this is a “win your way in” contest held exclusively by BP Orleans! You can’t get in to see the screening any other way! Desperate for a ticket? Make sure to head over to Boston Pizza in Orleans for an extra ballot!
Good Luck!

Baby Yums ~ Welcomes Fall with Apples!
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Bread puddings were the invention of thrifty cooks to make good use of stale bread. This one is packed with sautéed apple slices to give a memorable reminder of the past. It’s wonderful on its own or accompanied by cream, custard sauce or yogurt.
Preparation Time:15 minutes
Cooking Time:55 minutes
Servings:4
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp (25 mL) dry bread crumbs
- 6 large slices firm white stale bread, preferably home-made style
- 1/4 cup (50 mL) butter
- 3 cups (750 mL) sliced cored peeled Ontario McIntosh Apples
- 2/3 cup (150 mL) granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups (500 mL) hot milk
- 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla
- 1/2 tsp (2 mL)cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 2 tbsp (25 mL) red currant jelly, melted
Preparation:
Sprinkle crumbs in well-buttered 8-inch (2 L) square baking dish. Remove crusts from bread; spread bread with half of the butter and cut into quarters. Line dish with half of the bread, buttered side up.
In large skillet, melt remaining butter over medium-high heat; sauté apples for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with 3 tbsp (50 mL) of the sugar; sauté apples for 3 to 5 minutes longer or until apples start to turn golden. Do not let apples become mushy.
In bowl, beat eggs well; beat in remaining sugar. Gradually whisk in hot milk, vanilla, cinnamon and salt; pour half of the mixture over bread in dish. Evenly spread apple mixture over top. Cover with remaining bread and pour remaining egg mixture over top.
Place baking dish in larger shallow pan. Pour 1 inch (2.5 cm) boiling water into larger pan and bake, uncovered, in 325°F (160°C) oven for about 45 minutes or until custard is almost set. Remove baking dish to wire rack. Brush currant jelly over top of pudding. Serve hot or warm.
Here is another great recipe that was given to me from Spoiled Sugar via http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/news/2011/08/apple-cider-rice-cooker-oatmeal-for-baby/
Apple Cider Rice Cooker Oatmeal 6-8 Months
(steel cut oats used for this recipe)
Ingredients
2 1/2 cups of apple cider
2/3 cup of water
1 1/4 cups of rolled oats (don’t use quick cook oatmeal or the recipe won’t turn out well – trust me!)
shake of cinnamon
shake of nutmeg
pinch of powdered vanilla
handful of raisins or dates or chopped apples (optional – if using the raisins and/or dates, remove them if serving to baby!)
Directions:
I used steel cut oats for this and the texture was more chewy than you may want for your younger baby!
Lightly butter the rice cooker pot then combine all ingredients in the rice cooker and stir well
Close the cover and push the switch to cook
After 10 minutes, carefully open the rice cooker and give the oatmeal a quick stir, close and continue cooking.
Oatmeal is done when the cooking switch flips to off/keep/warm or whatever it does on your rice cooker (I have an Aroma 8 cup cooker, nothing fancy and only $24.95). Allow to stand for 5-10 minutes after cooking.
Enjoy!
Here is a deal for all Spoiled Sugar fans! If you e-mail me at info@babyyums.com with your favrite Apple recipe and if I post & share on my fan page you will get 1 package of 12 teething cookies for free. If you have any questions feel to e-mail info@babyyums.com

Baby Yums Spotlight ~ Carrots
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Each Month Baby Yums spotlights a Vegetable or Fruit. This month the spotlight is on Carrots. Here are a few fun facts:
Carrots are an excellent source of beta carotene, converted in the body to Vitamin A and a source of folacin and fibre.
TIPS:
- Carrots may be introduced between 6 and 8 months of age.
- Carrots are easy to digest and packed full of nutrients. Vitamin A, C and Calcium
- When buying carrots, look for minimal sprouting on the top. The more sprouts a carrot has the longer it has been sitting around.
- Best way to keep the flavour, in carrots is to refrigerate them
- Steaming is the best method for cookinig and preparing them
Here are some of my go to “Carrot” recipes that are sutiable for 8 + months enjoy!
Carrot-Rice Casserole
3 cups grated carrots
3 cups cooked brown rice
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley
1-1/2 cups evaporated skim milk (try plain yogurt instead.)
1/2 cup egg yolks
3 tablespoons grated nonfat or reduced-fat Parmesan cheese
Combine the carrots, rice, onions, herbs in a bowl, and stir to mix well. Add the milk
(or yogurt) and egg yolks, and stir to mix.
Coat a 2-quart casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray, and spread the mixture evenly in a dish. Sprinkle cheese over the top.
Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes to 1 hour, or until a sharp knife inserted in the center of the dish comes out clean. Remove dish from oven and let sit for 5 minutes before serving
Here is another go to great easy kid friendly recipe:
Carrot Potato Pancakes

A Shirt, A Dress – A Deal!
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I created a little project for myself and our seamstress Miranda Wolff this summer, Instead of stocking the same patterns over and over again, we’ve release limited editions of some amazing dresses/blouses. We’ve created and only made one of each size to be sold to the public – which means you are getting an original piece when you’re buying these blouses… But here’s the great part…
Buy a size up! With my girls I buy the next size up and this blouse works PERFECTLY as a little dress for the summer ( even cuter paired with a bloomer underneath) and as they grow and fall/winter comes you can wear the summer dress as a blouse with jeans or pants – You’ll easily get 2 maybe 3 seasons out of this piece – and all for only $20.00!!
Another great thing about our blouses is that the more you wash them, the more darling they become. As you wash and dry the elastic in the fabric becomes tighter as do the ruffles and it just gets so ruffly and cute! Now I don’t pre-wash them because of allergies so I’ll leave that for you to do – but you’ll watch with each wash your piece will get cuter and cuter!
We have many great print in-stock but hurry they are one of a kind in each size so go quick
Ps – Just listed is a strawberry shortcake edition – my FAV!

Jello Oranges!!!
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

If you’ve read any of my blogs, you’ve noticed that I love colours. Most of my activities/crafts involve some soft of dye. This recipe takes the cake, or should I say …. peel
It’s pretty easy – much easier than it looks and it’s just so cool! Here’s what you do
Step 1 – find some big oranges, the bigger and the harder the better!
Step 2 – cut the orange in half and hallow out the inside

Step 3 – prepare Jell-O as per it’s directions
Step 4 – Pour the liquid Jell-O into the orange bowls, we used muffin trays to support the oranges so they didn’t tip

Step 5- place the oranges in the fridge and run up to bed and sleep!
Step 6- Wake up and run down ( I know you will, I did to, it’s kind of like being a kid on Christmas Morning) and see your creation
Step 7 – carfully with a very sharp knife slice the oranges into “Orange Jell-O slices”…
Step 8 – Enjoy – but be careful, these can get messy - I suggest keeping a good supply of baby wipes on hand to clean up little mouthes and fingers! You might even want to check out all of our new babywipe cases - great to carry around extra wipes in, which you’ll need for messy hands!
Orange ya’ glad you read this post

Playdough – from scratch
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I just loved this activity and Im sure you will too – I was surfing the net to find a great recipie for playdough but it seemed they all called for cream of tartar – now I dont know about you – but I didn’t have any in my pantry – and I wasn’t about to pack up all the kids to make a special trip for something I’d likely never use again… so I found this recipie over at natural parenting tips
Play Dough Recipe:
- 1 Cup Plain Flour
- 1/4 Cup Salt
- 3 tsp of vinegar or lemon juice
- 2 Tablespoons of Oil (original recipe I only used 1 tbps I found it too oily)
- 1/2 cup of water
- Food Coloring
Method
- Mix the dry ingredients in a saucepan
- Whisk in the water over low heat
- Mix in the vinegar
- Pour in the oil
- Continue to mix over low heat until it forms a playdough texture
- Split up the dough, and knead in the food color (when it’s cool enough to touch)
I tripled the recipie and it made enough (and extras) for 4 kids! Just be easy on the oil, I’d suggest lowering it by half
If you have any other playdough recipies – especially an edible one – please feel free to share below!
Enjoy!

Beets provide antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and detoxification support. Beets contain calcium, potassium and even vitamin A. Both Vitamin A and Calcium play a large role in the healthy development of your baby.Choose small or medium-sized beets whose roots are firm, smooth-skinned and deep in color. Age for Introducing Beets: 8-10 months
here are a few great recipies to try out with your child(ren)

1 cup of cooked mashed beets
2 cups of m
Mix beets and potatoes together and serve.
Add a 1/2 cup soft cooked diced carrots for extra eye appeal.
Roasted Beet Shapes

Keep em’ busy for 39 cents!

I Spy Colours!
This little game that can be easily made by you! This I Spy Game kept my little five year old ( and some neighbour friends as well!) busy for HOURS – really it did, both making and playing! The game can be used anywhere – in a resturant waiting for your meal, in your backyard – or in the car! And – it’s easy and fun to make – you can even let your child make it themselves with a little supervision and help!
Here’s what you need
- Paint swatches – I let my son pick ours out, he really enjoyed it! (FREE!)
- A D-Ring Binder (39 cents!)
- Hole Punch(s) – we added a few extra star punches for fun! (I’m sure you have one at home!)

These were the pain swatches we found – I cut them in half so that there were a little more user friendly to little hands!

I then let my son join in on the activity. He punched holes in the top left corner of each paint swatch and then we inserted the D-Ring! Simple as that!

We then went outside and matched up colours from our neighbourhood ( and back yard) to the colours on the swatches – it was fun finding different shades too! Great acitivity to keep em’ active – work on colours and work on small motor skills punching the holes!!
Enjoy
